Day 01

Arrival

After arrival into Cusco airport, you will be greeted by a member of our Camps staff and taken to your accommodation in the city for the evening. We will use our time to explore a part of the city, give you briefings about the itinerary and to make sure that you are well set for the upcoming adventures.

Day 02

Visit Cusco and Transfer to Camp

This morning, you’ll be transferred to Camp Moray. There, you will be greeted by the Camp Manager who will give you a camp and community tour and explain more about the projects you’ll be getting involved with over the coming days – the group will have the opportunity to set their own goals for those projects within a broader set of objectives. The camp is at around 3,600 meters altitude in a community perched high above the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. In the evening, you’ll have the chance to relax, take in the scenery and catch up with your travel journal. Each evening will also involve a Reflection session in which the group think about what they are doing, how they are learning and what the potential impacts of their activities are on their host community.

Day 03

Community Projects and Cultural Activities

The community and Camps are working on several initiatives to improve infrastructure and provide safe and productive learning environments for local children. In addition to the projects in the school, we are building a toilet for each house in the community to improve sanitation. In the afternoon, we will also investigate local traditions such as cooking techniques and fabric making so that students have the opportunity to understand the lives of the people of the community, and their heritage.

Day 04

Community Projects

As you become increasingly more used to the altitude you will find the project work easier. Alongside local ‘maestros’ and accompanied by the sound of the many donkeys who live in the community, you will start to feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction as you see the progress you are making. This is a remote and quite poor community and the impact you can have in supporting their own initiatives is not to be underestimated. It is a privilege to be able to spend time with these people and see a very different way of life in the twenty first century.

Day 05

Archaeological site visit

This morning, we will head out across the mountains to see the Moray archaeological site. The views from the community and its surrounding hills are quite stunning and, alongside the insights into the modern lives of these people, we are gaining a sense of the lives of the Incas who roamed these hills and established their communities here. Moray archaeological site is an extraordinary example of Inca innovation and technological application and learning about how the Incas grew their crops and harnessed the wildness of these mountains in fascinating. In the afternoon we will be back in the community to ensure that we have reached the goals we set for ourselves and celebrate the closing of our time in the community. We will make some special, local food, perhaps dance a little and enjoy for the last time the astonishing nights skies that are often visible at this altitude.

Day 06

Departure

After saying goodbye to new friends, we will head back to Cuzco. Depending on flight time, there will be a last chance to visit the city – the centre of the Inca empire as well as an important Spanish colonial hub – before heading to the airport and saying farewell to the Andes and an incredible expedition experience.
